Books (and their websites) In order to familiarize oneself with 'shamanizing' in our modern world, one must be exposed to many different ideas, concepts and approaches in order to find our way. Take what works for you and leave the rest, that's my motto. Here are some books that have affected my path.
Shamanism- Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy- by Mircea Eliade. Published in 1964, 'Shamanism' describes techniques of practices by shamanic peoples around the world. Keep in mind, however, that Eliade was an anthropologist (as many describers of shamanic culture are) and so his perspectives are from the outside, so to speak. I came across this book in a thrift store very recently, after hearing about it for years. The interesting thing is that as I read about people in faraway places, I saw similarities in my own practices, without prior knowledge. I recommend this book so you can see how cultures shamanize, to give you ideas for your own practice.
The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner. This book brought shamanism out in popular culture and allowed many people to have access to legitimate information about shamanic culture around the world.
